Sister M. Kateri Nicolaus, IHM

Sister M. Kateri Nicolaus, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, September 22, 1989 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on January 6, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Adam J. and Elizabeth Murray Nicolaus. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, received the religious habit on May 8, 1939, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1941.

Sister Kateri served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul High School in Edgewood; RI; Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona, PA; Bishop Klonowski High School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA; Bishop Hoban High School in Wilkes-Barre, PA; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY; IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA. She served as a catechetical instructor St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA.

Sister also served as a member of the leadership team for the IHM Congregation, as well as the director of apostolic planning in Scranton, PA. 

Sister Kateri's most recent teaching assignment was at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice B. Hynes, and three brothers, George, Adam, and Reverend Eugene T. Nicolaus, S.S.

She is survived by a brother, John of St. Petersburg, FL, nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Tuesday September 26 with Mass of Christian Burial in the IHM Center Chapel at Marywood at 11:00 a.m, with interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Monday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
