Sister M. Vianney Lavelle, IHM

Sister M. Vianney Lavelle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, June 23, 1995 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania. 

She was born on November 19, 1908 in Archbald, Pennsylvania, and given the name Emma. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Kathryn Wright Lavelle.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1934, made first profession of her vows on August 2, 1936, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1939.

Sister Vianney served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Cresson, PA; Sacred Heart Elementary School in La Plata, MD; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; Mother of Mercy Elementary School in Washington, NC; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; and St. Aloysius Elementary School in Cresson, PA; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; and St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY.

From 1988 until the time of her death, Sister Vianney served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by seven sisters, Mary Woodworth, Sarah Holmes, Bridget, Catherine Finnerty, Veronica Sullivan, Della Malia and Gertrude Caviston, and four brothers, Patrick, Joseph, John and Edward.

She is survived by three sisters, Florence Lavelle, Blanche Marks, and Patricia McEvoy, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

With a quiet presence, simple goodness and endless generosity, Sister M. Vianney Lavelle gave 59 years of service to the people of God until her death on June 23, 1995. Sister Vianney dedicated 53 years as an elementary school teacher. These years gained her a special place in the hearts of children in elementary school from Pennsylvania to North Carolina and New York. In later years, she dedicated her life to her prayer ministry at St. Mary Convent, Manhasset, and at the Marian Convent, where she resided from 1988 to the time of her death.

Mother's first name could have also been spelled as Catherine.
