Sister M. Ellenita Gilroy, IHM

Sister M. Ellenita Gilroy, IHM of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 14, 1917 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Helen. She was the daughter of the late John Francis and Mary Loretta Walsh Gilroy. She entered into the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1938, made first profession of her vows on August 2, 1940, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1943.

Sister Ellenita served as a teacher in the following schools: St Joseph Elementary School in New Bern, NC, from 1940 to 1941; St Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1941 to 1947; St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1947 to 1953; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1953 to 1956; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA, from 1956 to 1964; Nativity Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1964 to 1966; and St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1966 to 1969.

Sister also served as a secretary in the school office at St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1969 to 1974; and at St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA, from 1974 to 1975.

From 1975 until the time of her death, Sister Ellenita served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Edmund, and John Francis (infant), and three sisters, Regina, Agnes Mary O'Hara, and Romayne  Anne Brislin.

She is survived by a brother, John F. of Bradenton Beach, FL, and nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
