Sister M. Philippa Carroll, IHM

Sister M. Philippa Carroll, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on  Friday, July 9, 1971 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 14, 1889 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Rose Cecelia. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Ann Mulherin Carroll.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1915, received the religious habit on July 6, 1915, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1917.

Sister Philippa served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Aliquippa, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in New Bern, NC; Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School in Inwood, NY; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA. 

Sister also served as the principal at the following schools: St. Joseph Elementary School in New Bern, NC; Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School in Inwood, NY; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA. 

She is preceded in death by a brother, Reverend John Francis, and three sisters, Juel, Mary Geraldine Dormer, and Margaret Angela Loughney.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
