Sister M. Ursulina Shaughnessy, IHM

Sister M. Ursulina Shaughnessy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 16, 1904 in Forest City, PA, and given the name Loretta Agnes. She was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Burns Shaughnessy.  She entered the IHM Congregation on June 15, 1920, made her temporary profession of vows on December 28, 1922, and final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister Ursulina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Michael's Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1923 to 1935; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1935 to 1939; Epiphany School in Sayre, PA, from 1946 to 1951; St. Peter Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, from 1951 to 1952; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA, from 1958 to 1960 and 1968 to 1970; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID; St. Francis Elementary School in Munhall, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; St. Mary John School in Cresson, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; as well as elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA. She served as the school secretary at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA,  from 1972 to 1973.

Sister Ursulina also served as a parish visitor at St. Patrick's Parish in Scranton, PA, from 1973 to 1990.

From 1990 until the time of her death, Sister Ursulina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, William, Joseph and George.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including a niece-in-law, Jean O’Shaughnessy of Seaford, DE.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 11 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m.
