Sister M. Sylvester Burns, IHM
Sister M. Sylvester Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 9, 1946 at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, Pennsylvania.
She was born on October 7, 1857 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Catharine. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Doyle Burns. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1876, received the religious habit on April 25, 1876, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1878.
Sister Sylvester served as teacher at the following schools: St. John School in Susquehanna, PA; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; and St. Paul School in Scranton, PA.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael, John, and Edward, and a sister, Julia A. Regan.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy (Patrick J.) Cannon and Mrs. Theresa (Patrick F.) Clark, both of Scranton, PA, several nieces and nephews, including Sister Mary Assumpta, SSJ, of Canada, and Brother Gabriel Cecilian Cannon, FSC, of Pittston, PA.
The funeral will be held on Friday, January 11 at St. Catherine's Church in Moscow at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call on Thursday afternoon or evening at St. Agnes Place.

Death claimed Sister M. Sylvester oldest member of the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart, this morning at the sister's rest home, St. Agnes Place, Elmhurst, where she had been for the past serveral years.
Sister M. Sylvester was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia Doyle Burns of North Scranton. She entered the novitiate at St. Cecilia's Academy in 1876 and received her religious habit in April of that year.
As a religious teacher, the deceased had taught at St. John's, Susquehanna; St. John's, Pittston; St. CeCcelia's (sic), this city; and St. Paul's, Green Ridge.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. P. J. Cannon and Mrs. P. F. Clarke, this city; a niece, Sister M. Assumpta, stationed in Canada; and four nephews, Brother Gabriel, Pittston; Jay, Thomas, and Edward Regan, this city.
The funeral will be held Friday morning from St. Agnes Place with a solemn high mass of requiem at 10 o'clock in St. Catherine's Church, Moscow. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemtery."
