Sister M. Lucian Reddington, IHM

Sister M. Lucian Reddington, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 22, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Born on August 27, 1898 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Catherine McCawley Reddington. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 1, 1915, made her temporary profession of vows on January 3, 1918, and her final profession of vows on December 8, 1933.

Sister Lucian served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1928 to 1932; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1934 to 1939 and from 1959 to 1964; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA, from 1939 to 1945; St. Lawrence Elementary School in South Williamsport, PA, from 1968 to 1969; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro; St. Bernadine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD; and St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; as well as schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

She served as a catechetical instructor a in St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA, from 1945 to 1951; and St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City, PA, from 1971 to 1973.

Sister Lucian also served as regional superior from 1964 to 1968, and as the Superior of the IHM Motherhouse in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1971.

From 1974 to the time of her death, she served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She is preceded in death by seven brothers, Joseph, Frank, Ambrose, James, Edward, Martin and Gerard; and four sisters, Mary Mullen, Catherine Franklin, Anita Reddington and Agnes Reddington.

She is survived by eight nephews, Thomas Reddington of North Middletown, NJ; Richard Reddington of Mobile, AL; Gerard Reddington of Belleville, NJ; Paul Reddington of Newark, DE; Martin Reddington of Florida; Thomas Reddington of Maryland; Frank Reddington of Florida; and Gerard Reddington of New Jersey; and eight nieces, Nancy Lyons of Avoca, PA; Agnes Perk of Pittston, PA; Mary Ellen Mulligan of Silver Spring, MD; Nancy Stone of West Virginia; Sally Halczak of Kearny, NJ; Rita Brady of West Sayville, NY; Esther Walsh of Florida; Alice Tucker of South Carolina; and Catherine Raff of Maryland.

The funeral will be Thursday, February 27 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m.

Archival remembrance:

Sister Lucian was the last living member of the twelve children born to Martin and Catherine Reddington of Pittston. She entered the IHM Congregation in 1915 and professed her vows in 1918. Sister served as principal and teacher at schools located in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Rhode Island. She also served as a religious education instructor at St. Peter in Wellsboro, and St. Agnes in Forest City. She later served the IHM Congregation as a regional superior and superior of the IHM Motherhouse on the grounds of Marywood College.
