Sister M. Cor Mariae Schroth, IHM

Sister M. Cor Mariae Schroth, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, September 22, 1981, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on November 28, 1890 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Anna L. Beck Schroth.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1923, received the religious habit on December 27, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.

In her early years, Sister Cor Mariae taught intermediate grades at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Basil Academy in Dushore, PA; and Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Elementary School in New York City, NY.

At St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA, Sister Cor Mariae served as an instructor of nurses from 1932 to 1956, and administrator from 1956 to 1968. During her time as the administrator, several renovations were made to the hospital, and the adjacent convent was constructed.

Sister Cor Mariae also served as the administrator of the Marian Convent in Scranton, from 1968 to 1971.

From 1971 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education at Marywood College, and went on to study nursing at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Later, she earned an Master of Arts degree with a concentration in the teaching of nursing sciences from Columbia University.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Lawrence, Monsignor Gerald, and Francis; and two sisters, Anna Marie (who died as an infant), and Gertrude Walsh.

She is survived by a brother, Edwin of Pittsburgh; several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Helen O'Malley of Duryea. 

The funeral will be Thursday, September 24 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent Chapel at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. or evening, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
