Sister M. Mercia Kennedy, IHM

Sister M. Mercia Kennedy, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, November 29, 1991 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on March 7, 1901 in Vandling, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late John and Catherine O'Neill Kennedy. A member of St. Agnes Parish in Forest City, she entered the IHM Congregation on October 2, 1919, received the religious habit on December 27, 1919, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1921.

Sister Mercia served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA; Immaculate Conception  Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; and St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY.

From 1980 until the time of her death, Sister Mercia served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Charles, Raymond and John, and three sisters, Pauline Muchitz, Mary Garvey and Kathryn.

She is survived by a brother, Dr. P. J. Kennedy of Wynnewood, PA, and nieces and nephews, including Sister Charles de Lourdes Kennedy, SSJ, of Steelton, PA, and Reverend Charles Kennedy of Philadelphia, PA

The funeral will be on Wednesday, December 4 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday afternoon or evening.
