Sister M. Nativite Layden, IHM

Sister M. Nativite Layden, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, October 9, 1993 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 11, 1915 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Julia Brennan Layden.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, was received into the novitiate on May 8, 1939 and made her profession of vows on May 8, 1941.

Sister Nativite served as a teacher at the following schools: Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. Paul in Cranston, RI; as well as at elementary schools located in Scranton and Lock Haven, PA, and Baltimore, MD. 

Sister also served as an catechetical instructor at St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro; and St. Agnes Catechetical Center in Forest City.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Francis, William and James.

She is survived by a sister, Helen Monahan of Carbondale, PA, a brother, Joseph of Elizabeth, NJ, and several nieces.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, October 12 at the Marian Convent at 7:00 p.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
