Sister M. Bernadette Carmody, IHM

Sister M. Bernadette Carmody, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, January 25, 1979, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on June 11, 1909 in Brooklyn, New York, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Margaret Brosnan Carmody. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1929, received the religious habit August 2, 1929, and pronounced her vows on July 31, 1931.

Sister Bernadette served as a teacher in high schools within New York and New Jersey. Her last teaching assignment at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Mount Holly, NJ.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NJ; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD. She was the superior at Our Lady of Grace Convent, Manhasset, NY.

From 1978 until the time of her death, Sister Bernadette served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, James, Martin, Francis, and Cornelius, and six sisters, Josephine, Kathleen, Ellen (Nellie), Helen, Noreen, and Sister M. Ephrem, IHM.

She is survived by a brother, Reverend John of Bridgehampton, NY, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Carroll of Brooklyn, NY, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, January 27 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent Friday afternoon and evening.
