Sister M. Audrey Cuff, IHM
Sister M. Audrey Cuff, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, PA.
She was born on February 14, 1923 in Carbondale, PA, and given the name Margaret. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Jennie Grier Cuff. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 2, 1950, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1953, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1956.
Sister Audrey served as a teacher at St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA, from 1953 to 1956, and St. Mary Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, in 1961.
Sister Audrey served as a registered nurse at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1961, 1967 to 1969 and 1991 to 2000. She was the supervisor of nurses at St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton, PA, from 1975 to 1991; and also served as a school nurse at St. Michael’s School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1961 to 1967 and 1969 to 1975.
Sister Audrey also served as a receptionist at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 2000 to 2006.
From 2006 until the time of her death, Sister Audrey was a prayer minister at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College, and a nursing diploma from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Carbondale, PA.
She was preceded in death by a three brothers, Thomas L., Joseph F. and Patrick A.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be Wednesday, December 7, at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Residence, 2300 Adams Avenue in Scranton. Friends may call at Our Lady of Peace Residence on Tuesday, December 6, between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Interment will follow Mass on Wednesday at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

It was in October 1950, the Holy Year, that Sister Audrey entered our IHM Community. Being a registered nurse and dedicated to caring for the needs of others, she responded in faith and love to the challenges that life presented to her. When her first assignment was to teach first and second grade she responded and did a fabulous job. She adjusted and always looked back to those days with joy and wonderful memories. As life presented itself in various assignments, her nursing care was evident, and she became known as an angel of mercy, putting no restrictions on the time, or involvement with those who were sick or in need of special care.
Her compassion, love, and faith made her an excellent nurse wherever she was called to serve. Her early years in community brought her to Elmhurst and the care of our elderly sisters and in later years to the Marian Convent.
Her years of ministry to the boys at St. Michael’s School were very rewarding and once again a challenge to her superb care and love for the
underprivileged and disturbed youth. Being assigned to St. Joseph’s Center as director of nursing, she responded to the needs of residents and staff. Audrey’s love and loyalty to her family and friends were outstanding.
Upon her return to the Marian Convent and later at OLP she once again found ways to make life better for others, always sharing her awareness of current events, keeping everyone alert to the sports arena. She also loved taking a bet and especially being a winner. In the midst of her pain and sufferings she always found time to connect with people, and her concern for the welfare of others continued within her own pains and sufferings.
May she rest in peace and Our Lady be with her always.
