Sister M. Cosmas McNamara, IHM

Sister M. Cosmas McNamara, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, September 19, 1966 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 9, 1883 in La Salette, Ontario, Canada, and given the name Helen Catherine. She was the daughter of the late John B. and Margaret Farrell McNamara. She was one of a small number of candidates that came to us from Ontario, Canada. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1905, received the religious habit on August 15, 1905, and made profession of her vows on July 16, 1907.

Sister Cosmas served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1907 to 1908; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, from 1908 to 1911; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1911 to 1916; St. Michael's School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1916 to 1918; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1918 to 1925; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1925 to 1932; and Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Elementary School in New York, NY, from 1932 to 1957.

From 1957 until the time of her death, Sister Cosmas served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ambrose Emmett, Edwin Leo, and Francis Amadeus, and four sisters, Mary C., Anna Loretta, Beatrice Margaret, and Sister M. Ethelreda, IHM.

She is survived by two brothers, Jerome of Ontario, Canada, and Gerald J. of Niagra Falls, Canada, a sister, Teresa Agnes Turner of Ontario, Canada, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
