Sister M. Germaine McCormick, IHM

Sister M. Germaine McCormick, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, January 22, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.   

She was born on October 10, 1908 in Forest City, Pennsylvania, and given the name Regina. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Matilda O'Neill McCormick.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1933, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1936.

Sister Germaine served as a teacher at the following schools: Cathedral High School in Scranton, PA, from 1936 to 1943; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA, from 1943 to 1944; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA from 1944 to 1946; St. Cecilia High School in Exeter, PA, from 1946 to 1948; St. Leo High School in Ashley, PA, from 1948 to 1950 and 1969 to 1970; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1966 to 1967; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1968 to 1969; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA, from 1970 to 1976; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1976 to 1981; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY; and at schools located Baltimore, MD. 

From 1981 to 1991, she lovingly cared for her aged siblings at the family home in Forest City, PA.

From 1991 to the time of her death, Sister Germaine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin/French, and a Master of Science degree in religious education, both from Marywood College.

She is preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Dunleavy, Catherine, and Mary, a brother, James, and two aunts in community, Sister Mary Regina O'Neill, IHM, and Sister M. Regina O'Neill, IHM.

She is survived by two brothers, Paul of Susquehanna, PA, and Thomas of Forest City, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, January 26 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday after 2:00 p.m.

Archival Remembrance:

With quiet strength and gentle witness, Sister M. Germaine served as a Sister of IHM for 63 years. In her years of ministry she made a lasting impact on the lives of many students in our IHM schools.  In 1981, Sister Germaine returned to Forest City where she served for 10 years in family ministry in the midst of the faith community that gave birth to her vocation. From 1991 to the time of her death, she served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent where she continued to touch hearts with her kind, caring manner.
