Sister Marie Helen Dougherty, IHM

Sister Marie Helen Dougherty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Thursday, August 12, 1982 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness. 

She was born May 27, 1906 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen Gerrity Dougherty. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 19, 1926, received the religious habit on December 29, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

Sister Marie Helen served as Director of Nurses at St. Joseph's Children's and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA; pharmacy technician and Director of Nursing Services, both at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA. She also served as a nurse at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA; and at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She earned a registered nursing degree from St. Mary's (Keller Memorial) Hospital in Scranton, and a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Marywood College.

She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. de Paul Dougherty, IHM, of Scranton, PA, and Mrs. Alice Fitzgerald of Maspeth, NY, two brothers, Edward Dougherty of Long Island, NY, and Joseph Dougherty of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, August 14 at the Marian Convent with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Sister Marie Helen Dougherty, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order more that 56 years died Thursday at the Marian Convent, Marywood, after an illness.

Daughter of the late Edward and Helen Gerrity Dougherty, she was born in Scranton, entered the IHM Congregation Sept. 19, 1926; received her religious habit Dec. 29, 1926, and pronounced her vows Jan. 2, 1929.

She held both a registered Nurse's Certificate from St. Mary's Hospital, and a bachelor of science degree from Marywood College.  she formerly was director of nurses at St. Joseph's Children's and Maternity Hospital (now St. Joseph's Center) and as assistant technician in pharmacy and director of nursing service at St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale.  She served as a nurse for a year at St. Agnes Place, Elmhurst, forerunner of the Marian Covent, and more recently had been on the staff of the Marian Convent.

Surviving are two sisters, Sister M. Paul (sic) Dougherty, a pharmacy assistant at the Marian Convent, and Mrs. John Fitzgerald, Maspeth, N.Y.; two brothers, Edward Dougherty, Long Island, N.Y., and Joseph, Scranton, and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday at the Marian Convent, with Mass in the convent chapel at 9:30 a.m.  Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Friends may call at the convent today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm."
