Sister Mary Richard McCarthy, IHM

Sister Mary Richard McCarthy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Thursday, July 3, 1986 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on April 1, 1889 in Dunmore, PA, and given the name Catherine. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary E. McAndrew McCarthy.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 24, 1910, received the religious habit on October 15, 1910, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1912.

Sister Mary Richard served as a teacher at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, and St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA. Sister served as a Latin, History and English teacher at the following schools: Immaculate Conception High School in Williamsport, PA; St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA; Maria Regina High School in Uniondale, NY; and Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA. She also served as teacher at elementary and high schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

From 1976 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Richard served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Leo Joseph, and two sisters, Theresa "Tessie" and Harriet Rodney.

She is survived by a brother, Frank of Kingston, PA, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

The funeral will be Monday, July 7 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent chapel at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent, Marywood, on Sunday afternoon or evening.
