Sister Mary Barbara O'Malley, IHM

Sister Mary Barbara O'Malley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, November 23, 1944 at the Mary Keller Memorial Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 8, 1881 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and given the name Charlotte. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret Holleran O'Malley. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 3, 1902, received the religious habit on July 31, 1902, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1904.

Sister Mary Barbara enjoyed her years of teaching children in our IHM mission schools, including at St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, William R. and Patrick, and a sister, Margaret.

She is survived by three sisters, Catherine Gallagher, Mary McNulty, and Beatrice, all of Pittston, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 25, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA, followed by interment at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Pittston. Friends may call at St. John's Convent in Pittston on Friday afternoon or evening.

"Sister Mary Barbara Buried at Pittston

Sister Mary Barbara, the former Miss Charlotte O'Malley, who at the time she was stricken ill was an instructor at St. John's High School, Pittston, was buried Saturday morning in St. John's Cemetery, Pittston.  Her death occurred Thursday at St. Mary's Keller Hospital, Scranton.

A solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston.  Officers of the mass were:  Rev. Maurice Sammon, celebrant; Rev. John R. Cunningham, deacon; Rev. Joseph E. O'Brien, sub-deacon; Rev. Joseph L. Barry, master of ceremonies.

Monsignor P.J. Boland delivered the sermon and paid tribute to the fine qualities of Christian leadership Sister M. Barbara had displayed as a nun in the Sisters of Mercy (sic).

Seated in the sanctuary were: Rev. E.J. Melley, Rev. A.A. Ziemba, Rev. E.H. O'Boyle, Rev. M. Jordan, Rev. M.J. Krupar, Rev. Joseph T. Hammond, Rev. Michael J. Kennedy, Rev. Joseph S. Gaion, Rev. J.P. McAndrew, and Rev. Thomas A. Tracey.

Bearers were Frank Burke, John F. Hawley, Patrick F. Walsh, Dr. William Sammon, Vincent Garvey and Leo Holleran."
