Sister M. Boniface Leonard, IHM

Sister M. Boniface Leonard, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, April 5, 1970 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after a short illness.

She was born on October 12, 1884 in Pleasant Mount, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Frances.  She was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ann Glynn Leonard.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1910, received the religious habit on August 2, 1911, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1913.

Sister Boniface served as a teacher in the following schools: Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1913 to 1915; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1915 to 1923; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1923 to 1925; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA, from 1925 to 1928; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1928 to 1934 and 1940 to 1946; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA, from 1934 to 1940; St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1946 to 1948; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA, from 1948 to 1949; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1949 to 1955; St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA, from 1955 to 1960; and St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1960 to 1966.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Joseph in Renovo, from 1934 to 1940; St. Leo in Ashley, from 1940 to 1946; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, from 1948 to 1949; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1949 to 1955; and St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA, from 1955 to 1960.

From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Boniface served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Daniel Paul, John Raymond, Patrick William, Frederick Leo, Michael Charles, and Reverend Joseph Benedict, and two sisters, Ellen Leonard and Genevieve Clune.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
