Sister M. Hortense O’Boyle, IHM

Sister M. Hortense O’Boyle, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, October 14, 1977, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born September 9, 1897 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mildred. She was the daughter of  late John and Elizabeth Feeley O’Boyle. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1915, received the religious habit on December 28, 1915, and made profession of her vows on January 3, 1918.

Sister Hortense served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; and St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary O'Hara and Agnes Kearney, and a brother, Frank.

She is survived by a sister, Marguerite of Olyphant, PA, a niece and a nephew.

The funeral will be Monday, Oct. 17 with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent Chapel with interment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Saturday and Sunday.

"Nun Dies; IHM Member For 62 Years

Sister M. Hortense O'Boyle, Maarian Convent, Marywood College, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order for more than 62 years, died Friday at the convent after an illness.

Daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Feeley O'Boyle, she was born in Olyphant and entered the order on Sept. 8, 1915.

Sister M. Hortense received her habit on Dec. 28, 1915, and pronounced her final vows on Jan. 3, 1918.

Sister M. Hortense taught in junior high school grades at St. Paul's School, Scranton; Most Holy Rosary School, Scranton; St. Dominic's, Oyster Bay, N.Y., and St. Patrick's School, Oneida, N.Y.

Surviving are a sister, Marguerite, Olyphant, a niece and a nephew.

The funeral will be conducted on Monday from the Marian Convent with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the convent chapel. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Viewing, at the convent, all day today and Sunday."
