Sister M. Paul Joseph McArdle, IHM

Sister M. Paul Joseph McArdle, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 15, 1975 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 28, 1905 in Muncie, Indiana, and given the name Ellen M. (Ella).  She was the daughter of the late Peter J. and Margaret Flaherty McArdle.  She entered the IHM Congregation on July 1, 1926, received the religious habit on December 27, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

Sister Paul Joseph served as a teacher in the following schools: Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA; St. Ephrem High School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Alphonsus High School in New York City; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY; St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA; and Altoona Catholic High School in Altoona, PA. 

Sister Paul Joseph also served as the superior and principal at St. Mary School in Manhasset, NY. She served as principal at St. Mary of the Mount High School and St. Rosalia High School, both in Pittsburgh, PA.

During her time at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister served as a religion and theology teacher, and was the chairperson of the education/religion department. She also served in sister formation. 

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Paul Joseph served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, William, Revered Cornelius, CP, Joseph, and Reverend James, CP.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Mansmann and Mary Majorack; nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
