Sister M. Joannes Marley, IHM

Sister M. Joannes Marley, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, November 2, 1989 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on January 23, 1905 in Avoca, Pennsylvania, and given the name Annie. She was daughter of the late John F. and Belinda C. Callahan Marley. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 12, 1928, received the religious habit on August 2, 1929, and made profession of her vows on July 31, 1931.

Sister Joannes served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in White Haven, PA; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA. 

Sister served as principal and local superior at St. Patrick  Elementary School in White Haven, PA; and Immaculate Conception  Elementary School in West Pittston, PA.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Joannes served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, Martin, Jack, William, and Michael, and two sisters,  Mary McGlynn and Ruth Gallagher.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. John Francis, IHM, of Scranton, PA, and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Friday afternoon or evening.
