Sister Joseph Marie McGraw, IHM

Sister Joseph Marie McGraw, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Saturday, January 24, 1981 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as a result of a heart attack.

She was born on April 7, 1899 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary F. She was the daughter of the late William A. and Johanna Maloney McGraw. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1918, received the religious habit on August 2, 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1921.

Sister Joseph Marie served as a teacher of music, junior high math, and science at schools located in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Paul in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick in Scranton, PA; Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY; and St. Patrick in Oneida, NY.

She also served as the director of residence at Marywood College in Scranton,, PA, and prefect at Central Catholic High School in Kingston, PA.

Since her retirement to the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, Sister Joseph Marie has been moderator of the Marian Convent Guild, and has assisted in a wide range of activities for the benefit of the IHM Sisters.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Reverend Paul Joseph.

She is survived by four sisters, Margaret, Isabelle and Eileen Murphy, all of Williamsport, PA, and Agnes C. Cody of South Bend, Indiana, and a niece.

The funeral will be Tuesday, January 27 with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday afternoon or evening.
