Sister M. Laurence Tierney, IHM

Sister M. Laurence Tierney, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on September 12, 1970 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, following a short illness.

Daughter of the late Edward and Hanna Doyle Tierney, she was born on October 26, 1897 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania; and given the name Anna.

Sister Laurence served as a teacher in the following IHM schools: Holy Rosary in Scranton, from 1917 to 1918; St. John in Pittston, from 1918 to 1919; St. Joseph in Williamsport, from 1919 to 1921; St. Cecilia in Scranton, from 1921 to 1923; St. Leo in Ashley, from 1923 to 1928; Sacred Heart in Jermyn, from 1928 to 1929; St. Charles in Sugar Notch, from 1929 to 1934; St. Mary in Pittston, from 1936 to 1938; St. Thomas in Archbald, from 1938 to 1939; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel in Dunmore, from 1939 to 1944; Mother of Mercy in Washington, NC, from 1944 to 1949; Holy Rosary in Scranton, from 1949 to 1952; St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington, NY, from 1952 to 1955; and Epiphany in Sayre, from 1955 to 1970.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. John O'Brien of Baltimore, MD; nieces and nephew.

The funeral mass will be on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Marian Convent in Scranton.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Below is transcribed text from obituary in The Evening Times newspaper from Sayre, Pa., published September 14, 1970

" Sister M. Lawrence Tierney of Sayre, died Saturday a the Robert Packer Hospital following a two week illness.

Sister Tierney was a Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and taught in the Sayre Epiphany School for 16 years.

She was born in Susquehanna, Pa., October 26, 1897, the daughter of Edward J. and Hannah Doyle Tierney.

Sister Tierney is survived by one sister, Mrs. John O'Brien of Baltimore, Md., six nieces and one nephew.

A con-celebrated high mass of the recitation of the Rosary was celebrated this morning at 11 o'clock in the Church of the Epiphany.

Following the mass, Sister Tierney was removed to the Immaculate Heart of Marian Convent, Marywood, Scranton, Pa.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Marian Convent."
