Sister M. Bernard Cunningham, IHM

Sister M. Bernard Cunningham, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, October 15, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 12, 1921 in New York City, NY, (grew up in Brooklyn, NY) and given the name Bernadette. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Josephine Sullivan Cunningham. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1941, made temporary profession of her vows on August 2, 1943, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1946.

Sister Bernard served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1971 to 1974; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1974 to 1976; Monsignor McHugh Elementary School in Cresco, PA, from 1977 to 1981; St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1981 to 1983; and at elementary schools located in Baltimore, MD, Pittsburgh, PA, Coeur d'Alene, ID, and Mount Holly, NJ.

From 1995 until the time of her death, Sister Bernard served as a in prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Annamae McLaughlin, Sister M. Jacqueline, IHM, Rosemary and Bernadette, and three brothers, Matthew, James and Francis.

She is survived by a sister, Josefa Carley, and a brother, Gerard, both of Brooklyn, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, October 19 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call on Friday at the Marian Convent after 2:00 p.m.
