Sister M. Berenice McCauley, IHM

Sister M. Berenice McCauley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Saturday, December 23, 1978, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

She was born on February 3, 1885 in Exeter, Pennsylvania, and given the name Genevieve.  She was the daughter of the late James J. and Catherine Kieley McCauley.  She entered the IHM Congregation on July 1, 1904, received the religious habit on August 15, 1905 and made her profession of vows on July 16, 1907.

Sister Berenice is best remembered as a business teacher having served in the following schools: Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, from 1907 to 1911; St. Joseph School in Danville, PA, from 1911 to 1914 and 1915 to 1916; Holy Rosary High Schoolin Scranton, PA, from 1914 to 1915; St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA, from 1917 to 1918; St. John the EvangelistSchoolin Bellefonte, PA, from 1918 to 1921; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA, from 1921 to 1929; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY, from 1929 to 1931; Sacred Heart of Mary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1931 to 1934; Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY, from 1934 to 1935; St. Paul High School in Scranton, PA, from 1935 to 1940; Immaculate Conception High School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1940 to 1947; St. Paul School in Cranston, Rhode Island, from 1947 to 1950; St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1950 to 1956; St. Cecilia School in Exeter, PA, from 1956 to 1957; and St. Agnes High School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1959 to 1966.  

From 1966 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, Alphonse, Joseph Francis, William Henry and James J.; and seven sisters, Rose Ellen, Marianna, Josephine Govreau, Agnes Gilbride, Catherine Ann, Margaret (Madge) Law, and Theresa McCauley.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 27, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, in Moscow, Pennsylvania.   Friends may call at the Marian Convent Tuesday afternoon and evening.
