Sister M. Celine Duffy, IHM
Sister M. Céline Duffy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, November 8, 1988 at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.
She was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on July 27, 1904, and given the name Ann Margaret. She was the daughter of the late James and Ann Marie Kelly Duffy. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 4, 1924, received the religious habit on December 28, 1924, made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926, and made her final vows on December 15, 1930.
Sister Céline served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Patrick High School in Spangler, PA, from 1926 to 1928; St. Lawrence High School in Portland, OR, in 1928; IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID, from 1928 to 1934; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1936; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA, from 1936 to 1943; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1943 to 1948; and St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA, from 1948 to 1955.
In 1955, she joined the faculty of Marywood College in Scranton, PA, where she taught religion and English, as well as serving as the director of personnel.
From 1981 until the time of her death, Sister Céline served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and an Master of Arts degree in English from Villanova University.
She is preceded in death by four brothers, James, Patrick, George and John.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Matilda Duffy, two nieces, Mrs. Edmund Weller of Scranton, PA, and Mrs. Jean Covey of Olyphant, PA, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The funeral will be Saturday, November 12 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Friday afternoon or evening.
