Sister M. Matthew O'Connor, IHM

Sister M. Matthew O'Connor, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Friday, August 1, 1986 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on December 6, 1906 in Binghamton, New York, and given the name Frances A. She was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Anna Cummiskey O'Connor. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1931, received the religious habit on April 21, 1932, and made profession of her vows on April 24, 1934.

Sister Matthew served as an English and Latin teacher at the following local schools: St. Paul School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA; Pocono Catholic Mission School in Cresco, PA; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Joseph School in Danville, PA. She also served as teacher at schools located in New York City and Manhasset, NY and Pittsburgh, PA. She also served as a teacher at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, during the summer sessions, for many years.

From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Matthew served as a prayer minister at the Marian Conventin Scranton.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Latin from Marywood College, a Master of Arts degree in guidance from Villanova University, and a Master of Arts degree in religious education from Marywood College. She did further graduate study at Columbia University.

She is preceded in death by a brother, John M., and a sister, Gertrude.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary O'Connor of Binghamton, NY, and Sister M. Anne Francis, IHM of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be Tuesday, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.
