Sister Anita Brotherton, IHM
Sister Anita Brotherton, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Consilia) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.
She was born on May 10, 1916 in Coeur d'Alene, Idah, and was the daughter of the late Louis and May LaVoie Brotherton. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, made her temporary profession of vows on May 3, 1937 and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1940.
Sister Anita served as a music teacher and/or principal at the following schools: St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA, in 1937; St. Lawrence Parish School in Portland, OR, from 1937 to 1942; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA, from 1942 to 1949; St. John High School in Pittston, PA, from 1955 to 1959; St. John High School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1959 to 1967; St. Mary High School in Avoca, PA, from 1983 to 1987; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; Mount Holly Regional Catholic School in Mount Holly, NJ; St. Ambose School in Bridgeport, CT; and at schools located in Altoona and Pittsburgh, PA.
Sister Anita also taught summer courses in the music department at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1972. She lovingly cared for her aged family members in Salem, OR, 1993 to 1997.
From 1997 until the time of her death, she served as an instructor in the IHM Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.
She received Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Music degree in education/supervision from DePaul University, Chicago.
She was elected to the Monmouth-Ocean IGE League, to the Principals’ Advisory Committee for the Diocese of Trenton, as the Catholic School Representative for Monmouth Title I and IV Programs, as Secretary and member of the Planning Commission of the Monmouth-Ocean Principals’ Association, to the Board of Commissioners of New Jersey State Department of Education for Principals and to the County Prosecutor’s Task Force to Combat Violence and Vandalism in New Jersey Schools.
She is survived by a sister, Marion B. Wood of Salem, OR; a niece, Marion May Wood of Salem, OR; and cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday, September 26 at 12:00 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday between 1:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
