Sister M. Gonzaga Walton, IHM

Sister M. Gonzaga Walton, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, November 17, 1983, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania. 

She was born on November 16, 1886 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anna Gonzaga. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Lahey Walton.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1916, received the religious habit on August 2, 1916, and made profession of her vows on August 5, 1918.

Sister Gonzaga served as a teacher of at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara School in Port Washington, NY; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; as well as high schools located in Altoona and Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister Gonzaga served as principal, and at the same time taught Latin, math and history at St. Cecilia Academy, Holy Rosary School, and St. John the Evangelist School, all located in Scranton, PA.

From 1968 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death, by a brother, Thomas; and a sister, Sister M. Augustine, IHM.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and cousins, including our Sister M. Justa Walton, IHM, of Baltimore, Maryland.

The funeral will be Saturday, November 19 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent chapel at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Friday afternoon or evening.
