Sister Marion Irving, IHM
Sister Marion Irving, IHM, M.Ed., (formerly known as Sister M. Lucille) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Tuesday, October 25, 1983 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, New York, after a brief illness.
She was born on September 5, 1921 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of Helen Doyle Irving-Hoffman and the late Robert B. Irving, and the step-daughter of the late Elmer Frank Hoffman. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1942, received the religious habit on May 10, 1943, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1945.
Sister Marion served as a teacher at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; as well as at schools located in New York and Rhode Island. She served as a high school religion and business teacher at Bishop O' Hara High School in Dunmore, PA; Bishop Hannon High School in Scranton, PA; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and in New York.
Sister Marion served as principal at St. Basil School in Dushore, PA.
From 1980 until the time of her death, Sister served as the director of religious education at St. Catherine's Parish in Binghamton, NY.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in religious education and a Master of Science degree in religious education, both from Marywood College, and a Master of Education degree from Duquesne University. She also did further graduate study at Seton Hall University's Menorah Institute and at Manhattan College. She served as secretary of the National Board of NAWR and was a member of the Association of Directors of Religious Education for the Diocese of Syracuse, New York.
In addition to her mother, Helen Irving-Hoffman of Binghamton, NY, she is also survived by a sister, Ann Munson of Susquehanna, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, October 28 with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Generalate Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Interment will followat St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. There will be a viewing at the McDevitt Funeral Home in Binghamton, NY, on Wednesday afternoon and evening, and a memorial Mass at St. Catherine's Church in Binghamton, NY, on Thursday morning. Local friends may call at the IHM Generalate on Thursday afternoon or evening.
