Sister M. Benedict Hore, IHM

Sister M. Benedict Hore, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, January 1, 1997 at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 13, 1913 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Cecelia. She was the daughter of the late Alphonsus S. and Catherine Philbin Hore. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1932, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1935, and final profession of her vows on April 30, 1938.

Sister Benedict served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1944 to 1950; St. Patrick Elementary School in White Haven, PA, from 1958 to 1964; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1970 to 1971; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School, Forest Hills, NY; and Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; as well as at schools located in Masontown, PA; Washington, NC; Brooklyn, NY.

Sister Benedict served as the principal at St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1964 to 1970.

At the time of her death, Sister was serving as an office assistant at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School, Forest Hills, NY.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine McGowan, and a brother, Alphonsus S., Jr.

She is survived by two sisters Mary Hoban of Scranton, PA, and Elizabeth of Dunmore, PA, a brother, Brother Godfrey J. Hore, FSC, of Audubon, PA, and a nephew, Joseph.

The funeral will be Monday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday after 2:00 p.m.
