Sister M. Emily Litzelman, IHM

Sister M. Emily Litzelman, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, April 17, 1974 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 12, 1903 in Dushore, Pennsylvania, and given the name Lydia. She was the daughter of the late Mathias and Josephine Marshall Litzelman. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1920, received the religious habit on December 27, 1920, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1922.

Sister Emily served as an teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1923 to 1926 and 1929 to 1933; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA, from 1926 to 1927; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1927 to 1929; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; from 1933 to 1934; St. Mary Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1934 to 1935; St. Monica Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, from 1935 to 1954; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1954 to 1968; and St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1968 to 1972.   

From 1972 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Leo.

She is survived by four brothers, Paul, George and Charles, all of Dushore, PA; Francis, of New Albany, PA, a sister, Helen Broschart of Estella, PA, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
