Sister M. Teresia Gibbons, IHM

Sister M. Teresia Gibbons, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 22, 1969 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on February 10, 1907 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary.  She was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Gibbons. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8,1931, received the religious habit on April 21, 1932, and made profession of her vows on April 24, 1934.

Sister Teresia served as a teacher at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY, in 1934; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD, from 1934 to 1935; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA, from 1937 to 1946; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1946 to 1949; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1949 to 1950; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Exeter, PA, from 1950 to 1952; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1952 to 1955; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1955 to 1957; and St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1964 to 1966.

Sister Teresia served as a home economics teacher at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1935 to 1937.

She also served as a music teacher at Resurrection Catechetical Center in Muncy, PA, from 1957 to 1960, and at St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wesllsboro, PA, from 1963 to 1964.

From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Teresia served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard E. and Dr. Charles.

She is survived by two brothers, Joseph of Scranton, PA, and Eugene of Pittston, PA, a sister, Grace L. Burns of S. Plainfield, NJ, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
