Sister M. Dorothea McHale, IHM

Sister M. Dorothea McHale, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died onTuesday, April 2, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 13, 1911 in Scranton, PA, and given the name Alice. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ann Theresa McHale McHale. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1931, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1934, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1937.

Sister Dorothea served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Charles Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Manhasset, NY; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY; Immaculata High School in New York, NY; Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; Altoona Catholic High School in Altoona, PA; Bishop Kendrick High School in Norristown, PA; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA; Bishop Klonowski High School in Scranton, PA; and Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA.  She also served as an instructor at the IHM Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as principal at St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA.

From 1995 until the time of her death, Sister Dorothea served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in education from St. John University, New York.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Sister Ann McHale, IHM, Rita Sheffield and Mary Bowes, and a brother, Thomas J.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA.

A wonderful educator, Sr. Dorothea poured herself forth generously preparing students for lives of service to God and to humanity. As a teacher she made a difference in the lives of countless young people and families.
