Sister M. Ursula Burns, IHM

Sister M. Ursula Burns, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, January 17, 1984, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on on November 3, 1905 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and given the name Lourdes. She was daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Tigue Burns.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1931, received the religious habit on April 21, 1932, and made profession of her vows on April 24, 1934.

Sister Ursula served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Sugar Notch, PA; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA; St. Cecilia Elementary School in Wyoming, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Our Lady of Grace Elementary School in Greensboro, NC; and Sacred Heart School in LaPlata, MD; as well as at schools located in Manhasset, New York.

From 1976 until the time of her death, Sister Ursula served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Francis, and two sisters, Mary T. and Elizabeth.  She is also preceded in death by an aunt, Sister Mary Peter Burns, IHM, who was also in the IHM community.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, January 20, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday afternoon or evening.
