Sister M. Angelus Swanick, IHM

Sister M. Angelus Swanick, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on September 16, 2000, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of Grace Swanick Flannigan and the late Thomas Swanick, she was born on May 28, 1928 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1946, made her temporary profession of vows on May 9, 1949 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1952.

Sister Angelus served as a teacher at the following elementary schools: St. Ann in Scranton, from 1951 to 1952; Immaculate Conception in West Pittston, from 1959 to 1961; St. Patrick in Olyphant, from 1968 to 1970; Monsignor McHugh in Cresco, from 1970 to 1976; St. Thomas in Archbald, from 1984 to 1985; St. John the Evangelist in Silver Spring, MD; St. Dominic in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Patrick in Oneida, NY; as well as schools located in Altoona, PA; Baltimore, MD; La Plata, MD; and Brooklyn, NY.

Sister also served on the support staff of the IHM Communications Office at the IHM Center in Scranton, from 1986 to 1987.

From 1987 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Dixon and Margaret Lipko.

She is survived by her mother, Grace Swanick Flannigan of Archbald; two sisters, Mary Grace Young of Archbald; and Joan Usher of Carbondale; three brothers, Paul Swanick of Carbondale; Thomas Swanick of Cocoa, FL; and Joseph Swanick of Albuquerque, NM; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
