Sister M. Athanasius Diskin, IHM
Sister M. Anthanasius Diskin, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, October 12, 1930 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, following a brief illness.
She was born on September 8, 1865 in Birmingham, England, and given the name Mary. She was the daugther of the late Patrick and Sarah Costello Diskin. The family immigrated to the United States before 1876, and settled in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1887, received the religious habit on March 6, 1888, and made profession of her vows on April 8, 1890.
Sister Athanasius served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA; St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA; and St. Thomas School in Providence, RI.
She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Helena, IHM, of Avoca, PA, Sister M. Antoinette, IHM, of Providence, RI, a brother, John Diskin, of Scranton, PA, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 14 at 9:45 a.m. from St. Rose Convent, Carbondale, PA. A solemn high mass of requiem will be sung in St. Rose Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery in Carbondale.

Much sorrow has been occasioned in this city by the announcement of the death of Sister Athanasius, who passed away yesterday morning at 5 o'clock in St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale, following a brief illness. Sister Athanasius entered the order of the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 42 years ago. She resided in Scranton prior to entering religious life.
Sister Athanasius left this city, where she had resided for 40 years, several months ago. She went to Carbondale and became a teacher in St. Rose Parochial School. The nun was stationed at St. John's convent and took a large part in furthering the education of the youth of this city, where she had endeared herself to the people of the city. She had also been stationed at Providence in the early part of her religious life.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother: Sister M. Helena, of Avoca; Sister M. Antoinette, of Providence; John Diskin, of Scranton.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9:45 o'clock from St. Rose convent, Carbondale. A solemn high mass of requiem will be sung in St. Rose Church at 10 o'clock. Burial will be in the sisters' plot in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill, Carbondale."
