Sister M. Gertrudis Porter, IHM

Sister M. Gertrudis Porter, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died onMonday, November 8, 1971 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on August 26, 1901 in Trentwood, Washington, and given the name Gertrude. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Sarah Jane McCanna Porter. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 30, 1919, and made profession of her vows on January 29, 1921.

Sister Gertrudis served as teacher in the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, in 1920; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1920 to 1921; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, in 1921; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1922 to 1925; IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID, from 1925 to 1941, 1950 to 1955, and 1968 to 1971; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID, from 1941 to 1944; and St. Lawrence Elementary School in Portland, OR, from 1944 to 1950 and 1955 to 1965. 

From 1971 until the time of her death, Sister Gertrudis served as a prayer minister at the Marian convent.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Edward and Joseph, and three sisters, Mary Ann Spiva, Agnes Porter Pringle and Carolyn Goeden.

She is survived by a brother, Thomas of Spokane, WA, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
