Sister M. Suzanne McCarthy, IHM

Sister M. Suzanne McCarthy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Monday, September 7, 1992, at Mercy Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on March 8, 1914 in Moosic, Pennsylvania, and  given the name Rose A.  She was the daughter of the late Edward T. and Mary V. Cummings McCarthy. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1940, received the religious habit on August 2, 1940, and made profession of her vows on August 3, 1942.

Sister Suzanne served as a teacher at the following local schools: Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; and St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA. Sister also served as a teacher at elementary schools located in Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

From 1985 until the time of her death, Sister Suzanne served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and John, and two sisters, Mary and Claire Hannon.

She is survived by a sister, Loretta Margaret Graham of Wilkes-Barre, PA, nieces and nephews.  

The funeral will be Wednesday, September 9 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent chapel at 7 p.m. Interment will follow at Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania, on Thursday morning. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
