Sister Miriam Therese Rihn, IHM

Sister Miriam Therese Rihn, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 11, 1989, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Born on June 9, 1903 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Maurice W. and Margaret Welsh Rihn.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1924, was received into the novitiate on December 29, 1924, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Miriam Therese was an accomplished musician, and served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Ann in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick in Scranton, PA; St. John in Pittston, PA; St. Patrick in Olyphant, PA; West Central Catholic High School in Kingston, PA; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD; St. Patrick in Oneida, NY; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; as well as at schools located in Altoona, PA.  

Sister also served as a social studies teacher at St. Mary of the Mount School in Pittsburgh, PA, where she also gave private piano lessons, from 1963 to 1985.

From 1985 until the time of her death, Sister Miriam Therese served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in music from Columbia University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Maurice William, Jr.

She is survived by three sisters, Catharine, Margaret, and Sister M. Laurencia Rihn, RSM, all in Pittsburgh; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, June 15 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon after 2 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
