Sister Ellen Marie Loftus, IHM

Sister Ellen Marie Loftus, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, September 2, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 21, 1910 in Pittston, PA, and given the name Mary Benedicta. She was the daughter of the late William and Ellen Coyne Loftus. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1926, made her temporary profession of vows on January 2, 1929 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1932.

Sister Ellen Marie served as a principal at the following schools: Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty Fort, PA, from 1954 to 1960; and at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1966 to 1969.

Sister served as principal and teacher at the following schools: St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Devon, CT; as well as at schools located in Baltimore, MD, and Brooklyn and Forest Hills, NY.

From 1996 until the time of her death, Sister Ellen Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in psychology and administration from St. John University.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, William, James, Myles and Joseph, and a sister Sally Kelly.

She is survived by thirteen nieces Sheila Tripputi of West Hartford, CT; Nancy Berry of Lincolndale, NT; Nancy Saunders of Laflin, PA; Kathy Burns of Pittston, PA; Mary Christine Remick of Dalton, PA; Ellen Marie Loftus of New York, NY; Beverly Slane of West Haverstraw, NY; Frances Jackson of Scarsdale, NY; Jane Jankowski of Bronx, NY; Sally Dumphy of NJ; Betty Ingal of FL; Mary Murdock of CT; Sandy Hesselbacker of Pearl River, NY; and four nephews Patrick Loftus of Pearl River, NY; William Loftus of Forty Fort, PA; Paul Loftus of Daytona Beach, FL; and Anthony Loftus of Raleigh, NC.

The funeral will be Saturday, September 6 at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday after 2:00 p.m.
