Sister M. Reginald Patterson, IHM

Sister M. Reginald Patterson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, March 3, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 20, 1908 in Scranton, and given the name Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Butterman Patterson. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, made her temporary profession of vows on April 24, 1933, and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1936.

Sister Reginald served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Michael's Industrial School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1933 to 1936; and at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury in Park, NJ, from 1936 to 1937.

Sister Reginald was an accomplished musician, and served on the faculty of the Marywood College Music Department from 1937 to 1989. Among her achievements was the publication of "A Mass in Honor of Mary, Mother of the Church."  Marywood College honored Sister Reginald in 1989 by designating a Presidential Scholarship in her name. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Society for Music Theory.

Sister also served as an instructor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1989 to 1990.

From 1990 until the time of her death, Sister Reginald served as a prayer minister at both the IHM Center, and the Marian Convent, both in Scranton.

She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in piano from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Mary Patterson, and two brothers, James and Leonard.

She is survived by a niece, Clare Fisne of Clark's Summit, PA, and other nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
