Sister M. Florence Langan, IHM

Sister M. Florence Langan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 12, 1916 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary B. She was the daughter of the late John A. and Margaret V. Jackson Langan.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1932, made her temporary profession of vows on April 30, 1935, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1938.

Sister Florence was an accomplished artist and served as a teacher at St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at schools located in Brooklyn, Manhasset, and New York, NY, and Pittsburgh, PA.  She served as an art and math teacher at the IHM Novitiate in Scranton, PA, from 1962 to 1969.

Sister also served as graphic artist at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1991, and in the IHM Communications Office at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1991 to 1998. 

From 1998 until the time of her death, Sister Florence served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in art from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in art from New York University.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve (Jeanne) Langan.

She is survived by a sister, Helen Wright of Vero Beach, FL, a brother, Robert of Mendon, MI, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, February 8 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
