Sister Mary Elsie Miller, IHM

Sister Mary Elsie Miller, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 26, 1917 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Martin Joseph and Iona Callis Miller. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1937, made temporary profession of her vows on May 7, 1940, and final profession of her vows on August  1, 1943.

Sister Mary Elise served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1940 to 1944; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1944 to 1945; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1951 to 1953; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1967 to 1968; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; as well as at schools located in Forest Hills, NY, and Baltimore, MD.

Sister served as principal at St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1961 to 1967; Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School in Forty-Fort, PA, from 1959 to 1961; and St. Joseph High School in New Bern, NC, from 1958 to 1959.

She also served as a librarian at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1976 to 1980 and 1981 to 1992; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD; and at schools located in Williamsport and Pittsburgh, PA.

From 2001 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Elsie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, a Master of Science degree in religious education, and a Master of Science degree in librarianship, all from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Martin Joseph, Jr., William, and Martin James, and a sister, Catherine. 

She is survived by a sister, Rosalie Beatty of Tire Hill, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment in the Miller Family Plot at St. John's Cemetery in Bellefonte, PA.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday, March 31, between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
