Sister M. St. James Gilmartin

Sister M. St. James Gilmartin, IHM,  of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, July 7, 1978 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on September 19, 1904 in Dunmore, PA, and given the name Mary Edith. She was the daughter of the late John and Anna Magdalen Golden Gilmartin.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1923, received the religious habit on August 15, 1923, and made her final profession of vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister St. James served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1925 to 1927; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1927 to 1978; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA, from 1928 to 1933; Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, NY, from 1933 to 1944; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1944 to 1950; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1950 to 1951; St. Peter Cathedral School in Scranton, PA, from 1951 to 1957; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1957 to 1958; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1958 to 1967; Archbishop Neale Elementary School in La Plata, MD, from 1967 to 1968; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1968 to 1974.  

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister St. James served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a brother, James F.

She is survived by a brother, Harold J. of San Diego, CA, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
