Sister Katherine Sugrue, IHM

Sister Katherine Sugrue, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. Raphael) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on July 10, 1999 as the result of a car accident in Pike County, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late Dennis and Katherine M. Rice Sugrue, she was born on August 21, 1929 in Waterbury, Connecticut.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1947, made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1950 and her final profession of vows on August 2, 1953.

Sister Katherine served as a teacher at St. Rose High School in Carbondale, from 1958 to 1961; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh and Baltimore, MD.

Sister Katherine also served as a faculty member in the French Department at Marywood College in Scranton, from 1965 to 1969 and 1972 to 1974; sector superior on the IHM Congregation leadership team from 1974 to 1978; support staff of  Mercy House, Albany, NY, from 1978 to 1979; director of pastoral ministry at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, from 1979 to 1991; director of the IHM associate program at the IHM Center in Scranton, from 1991 to 1998; and spiritual director at the IHM Spiritual Renewal Center in Cresco, from 1998 to the time of her death.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College; a Master of Arts degree from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts; and a doctoral degree from the University of Paris, all in French. She also completed studies in French literature and culture at L'Universite de Toulouse- Bordeaux in France, and studied in clinical pastoral education at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts.

She was a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, and had previously been a member of the Modern Language Association of America and the American Association of Teacher of French.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris Doran of Waterbury, CT; and Mary Selover of Pinella Park, FL; a brother, Col. Francis J. Sugrue, UAF Retired of La Grange, GA; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the IHM Center, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the IHM Center on Wednesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
