Sister Mary Alois Ortner, IHM

Sister Mary Alois Ortner, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 5, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York, and given the name Carolyn Marie. She was the daughter of the late Louis P. and Lillian Louisa Meiss Ortner. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1936, made temporary profession of her vows on August 3, 1938, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1941.

Sister Mary Alois served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, PA, from 1955 to 1957; South Scranton Central Catholic High School in Scranton, PA from 1966 to 1971; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA from 1982 to 1984; Notre Dame High School in East Stroudsburg, PA from 1984 to 1985; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA; St. Raymond High School in East Rockaway, NY; St. Patrick High School in Oneida, NY; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY; Bishop Kellenberg High School in Uniondale, NY, from 1987 to 1988;  St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY;  and at schools located in Pittsburgh and Altoona, PA, and Forest Hills, NY.

Sister also served as a receptionist at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, 1996 to 2001.

From 2001 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Alois served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in education from St. John University.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis G. and Reverend John, S.J., and three sisters, Sister St. John, IHM, Helen C., and Aloyse P. Demuth Kowalski.

She is survived by two nephews, Charles Demuth of Jersey City, NJ; and Francis Demuth of Pine Bush, NY, two nieces, Aloyse Marie Demuth of Chester, MD, and Helen Henkler of Mahwah, NJ, and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, February 16 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday after 2:00 p.m.
