Sister M. Joyce McQuaide, IHM

Sister M. Joyce McQuaide, IHM,  of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, September 8, 2002 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 14, 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Annina Mary. She was the daughter of the late Franklin Thomas and Eleanor Teresa Joyce McQuaide. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, made temporary profession of her vows on May 3, 1937, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1940.

Sister Joyce served as a teacher at the following schools: All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; St. Thomas Elementary School in Bedford, PA; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; and at elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA, and Manhasset, NY.

Sister served as principal at Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1938 to 1949; and Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA, from 1960 to 1961.

Sister Joyce also served as the administrator of St. Mary Home in Cresson, PA, and the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, PA; superior of the Marian Convent, from 1969 to 1973; and receptionist at the Marian Convent from 1993 to 1996.

From 1996 until the time of her death, Sister Joyce served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Katharine Cerrico, Eleanor Stoker and Mary Claire Hammond, and three brothers, Harry, Thomas and Franklin.

She is survived by two sisters, Joyce Barr and Irene Swanson, both of Pittsburgh, PA, a sister-in-law, Rita McQuaide of Pittsburgh, PA, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m.
