Sister M. Felician Hurley, IHM

Sister M. Felician Hurley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, December 4, 2003 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania. 

She was born on May 26, 1913 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Dorothy. She was the daughter of the late John F. and Bridget Mugan Hurley.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1933, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1936.

Sister Felician served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1933 to 1938, St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1953 to 1954, Monsignor McHugh Elementary School in Cresco, PA, from 1976 to 1978; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; Little Flower School in Bethesda, MD; St. John the Evangelist Elementary Schoolin Silver Spring, MD; as well as at elementary schools located in Brooklyn, NY.

Sister also served on the faculty at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1955 to 1968.

From 1997 until the time of her death, Sister Felician served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree education degree from St. John University in Brooklyn, NY.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Joseph, and a sister, Helen Kersavage.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Christina Kersavage of Rochester, NY, Patricia Conroy of Beacon Falls, CT, Ann Gustainis of Caledonia, NY, Jane Mathis of Leroy, NY, Stanley Kersavage of Susquehanna, PA, and  John Hurley of Shelton, CT.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 10 at 9:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Tuesday, December 9, between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
