Sister Dorothy Lyons, IHM

Sister Dorothy Lyons, IHM, (formerly Sister M. Fabian), of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Thursday, April 1, 1982, at the Marian Convent, Scranton, after an illness.

She was born on April 9, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY, and was the daughter of the late Albert D. and Margaret Daly Lyons. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 11, 1949, received the religious habit on August 2, 1949, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1931.

As a teacher of intermediate and junior high, Sister Dorothy served on the faculty of the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1951 to 1952; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1952 to 1954; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ, from 1954 to 1955; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA, from 1955 to 1957; St. Bernardine Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1957 to 1963; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI, from 1963 to 1968; St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC, from 1968 to 1969; Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC, from 1969 to 1971; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1971 to 1977; and Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY, from 1980 to 1981.  She also served as local superior at Holy Trinity Convent in Poughkeepsie.

Sister served as principal at the follow schools: Our Lady of Perpetual Help Elementary School in Rocky Mount, NC, from 1969 to 1971; and St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1977 to 1980.

From 1981 until the time of her death, Sister Dorothy served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by a sister, Adelaide Gilmartin of Bellmore, NY, a brother, Dr. (Albert) Dan Lyons of Gulfport, MS, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday, April 5 at the IHM Generalate Chapel, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday afternoon or evening.
